Valentines Day 2017 | It’s the thought that counts..right?

Ah, the day after Valentine’s Day; you still have the high from the presents and giant bouquet of flowers and fancy dinner…

Wait, you didn’t get any of those things? Man, did he mess up…or did he?
Sure, getting all of those things above is great and dandy but is it really necessary?

To me, Valentines Day is supposed to be a day of reflection and gratitude to that special someone that is in your life. A time to set aside your busy day and busy thoughts and appreciate the person you love and care about.  Take the time to write or say something nice to that person. It doesn’t have to be a whole letter or a song, just have it come from  a loving place.

Chad, my husband, and I have always had an unspoken agreement that we don’t need to go all out on valentines day. For example, I got him a framed picture of me that he mentioned a few times that was his favorite snap shot of me for his desk at his office. The year before that I planned to cook him dinner but then I ended up getting sick and Chad took care of me lol. Its about the small things; the small thank you’s and I love you’s that, for me, make up our strong relationship. Its the memories that you make as a couple keep your foundation strong for the future.

Yes, confession time, he did get me a beautiful flower arrangement and we went to Maru Sushi (best sushi is Grand Rapids – check it out!) for dinner this year. But, what was more important than the flowers was the note attached to it. It was beyond sweet and from the heart.

That. My friends. Is the true meaning on Valentines day.

Something as simple as writing a note or a letter should be good enough for this holiday. There shouldn’t be a need or pressure to go all out and buy expensive things for the one you love. It truly is the thought that should count.

What did I do for Chad? I think I stepped up my awesome wife skills this year, not to brag or anything. If you follow me on Instagram you would have already seen the donuts I got him with our saying on them “love you more” on his favorite type of donut. The donuts are from Donut Conspiracy, also mentioned in my previous post for thoughtful Valentines Day gifts. They are a great local company in GR that recently opened and has gotten a great following based on a quality product and awesome customer service.

I took my own advice on my previous blog post, Valentines Day Gift Guide – Budget Friendly & Thoughtful Last Minute Gifts, and got his favorite dessert! I mean, it was pretty great gift with a personal twist, my favorite type of present.

So next year when you have flowers in one hand, chocolate in the other and a giant teddy bear dragging behind maybe drop a few things and try something simple. Back to the basics my friends, it will go farther than you think.

Cheers!
